Mas vale Tarde que nunca !!

Hello ! My little dumplings ! I have been meaning to pen down my thoughts for quite a while now. It is so ingrained in my mind I tell you , " Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing." Blessed are those who can do the latter , as for me the former is an easy alternative. I happen to use the right side of my brain more than the left. In other words I am a creative person. Having said that, I absolutely worship those who are a zillion times more talented than me in any of the creative arts.Of the many forms of creativity, advertising is something that is accessible to almost everyone to consume, thanks to the magic of syndication. If you do observe advertisements carefully , then you might have noticed a very sweet ad of Tanishq jewellery being broadcast these days. There is a dusky woman in the ad who is shown putting on jewellery for her wedding. In the next shot we see a little girl peeking through the door. The girl comes inside the room and we learn that the little girl is her daughter. They both go outside and in the next sequence we see the woman taking pheras with the new man in her life.In the midst of the phera ceremony the little girl yells , "Mumma , I also want to go round and round." These makes the woman squirm a little as she looks nervously at her daughter. Before she could say anything , her new husband asks the little girl to come and join them. The three of them are now going round the holy fire. The expression on the woman's face at this time is priceless, she looks relieved and happy at the same time.

In many ways the ad is ground breaking, as not only does it show remarriage , which is still a taboo in our culture , in a positive light ; but  it has subtle nuances to  it which are far more pleasant if you could put in the pieces together and conjure the bigger picture.

The beauty of the ad lies in the fact that there is no remorse or emotional trauma shown to justify the second marriage. We don't even know whether her ex-husband died or they got divorced or he just plainly left. This is a very bold step in a society which looks divorce with contempt and believes in the sanctity of marriage at any cost. More often than not I get into heated discussions with people on the topic of separation in case of an unhappy relationship. I get surprised with the response that I get from people and their views on such sensitive issues. One person told me once that divorce is for retards. When I gave some strong reasons for separation like physical abuse , emotional abuse , cheating , drugs , drinking and so on , the person got somewhat convinced that it is valid only in case of physical abuse . I was again disappointed , does this mean there is no justification for separation in  the rest of the cases or even for the separation of those unfortunate people who are just plain unhappy ? I am not saying that you don't need to work on the marriage.Every relationship is hard work, but if after all your efforts, you can not find happiness together, isn't it logical to go your separate ways so that both of you can find someone who really makes you happy.

The ad is a small step towards the bigger change which the Indian society will see in at least 10 years from now. It has come as a breath of fresh air in our Bourgeois society , though it has come very late in time , but as the Spanish say - Mas vale tarde que nunca !! (Better late , than never !!)

Che` Bella Donna !!!

Sometime back I had read an American woman named Michelle's blog about her travels to Italy. I saved the link of the blog, but forgot to save the address to the pointer of the link in my brain. In other words, I have lost the link.I had saved it because I wanted to share one of her posts with you all.As that intention of mine has gone down the drain, I have decided to recreate that post from my memory. Please bear in mind that only the words are mine ,the idea is not.

Michelle , if you are reading this , please consider that this is not a rip off of your post but an homage to the contrary. Also, please share the link of your blog with me. I more than love your posts.

Che` Bella Donna !!                       starts here ...... (the title is my idea and is  Italian for:- That attractive Woman !!)

Italian women are beautiful and on top of that, they wear body hugging clothes with plunging necklines and narrow waistlines.Their silhouettes glow in the scorching Italian heat as the material of the clothing hugs their skin so tightly that when an Italian woman walks , her body swivels as the naked body would swivel , which is pretty much the idea. They have long cascading dark hair which beautifully contrast their fair and flawless skin.Strolling in the streets of Rome one day I saw one such angel. She was wearing a sexy black dress with the neckline so low that it could barely keep her breasts. She was very tall and the dress was trying to touch her knees. Her gold stilettos matched perfectly with the danglers in her ears. Her shiny black mascara highlighted her big brown eyes which sparkled  in the afternoon Italian sun.She was walking in leisure in the crowded streets of Rome and there was not a single eye which wasn't fixated on her.
I have been told many a times that I am a woman of above average looks.I have noticed myself that when I walk down the streets a few heads do turn. But that day , no one even looked my way, all eyes were on that magnificent angel who appeared to have descended from a forbidden land.
She continued to pace forward not looking at anyone and quite lost in herself.I looked at her and thought,"Huh ! What an attitude!" and started walking in the opposite direction. Suddenly I changed my mind and decided to walk up to her to complement  her on her beauty.I went close to her and spoke in broken Italian. She stared back at me with a perplexed expression on her face. I told her again and this time she realized that I was serious. She smiled and said ,"Grazie Mille " (Thank you very much) and continued walking.
I noticed from a distance that she was still smiling to herself. It was then that it struck me , she was not aware of the eyes that were on her in the street. She was so comfortable with herself that everything else around her was almost non-existential.
This is what makes Italian women so beautiful.Being an Italian woman is about being beautiful and not caring what anyone else is thinking about you.I wish I some day muster up the courage to wear a sexy beautiful dress, it may not be quite like the one that woman was wearing in the busy Italian market of Rome, but  at least I wish that  I will be able to flaunt it with the same attitude with which she flaunted it.
I have been in Italy for quite a while now and people always ask me what am I doing in Rome?
Well , I am working on that attitude!

The perfect Goodbye....

It is funny isn't it ? Our mind . Here I was trying to study some important chapter for my certification exam and my mind was asking me questions. Haven't you been out of commission from your writing for over a month now? What is it , have you run out of ideas ? It is so typical ! Typical of you ! You just can't focus on one thing can you ? One day it is painting , the other day writing and yes how can I forget the infamous Guitar phase?

These questions continued for quite a while and then I brushed them off . I concentrated on the task at hand , finished a chapter from my brand new Management Guide and promised myself that next morning I will work on my new post. I keep my promises - Always .

I went to wave good bye to a friend recently. She and I became friends somehow in a short time span. I liked her company (I hardly like people to tell you the truth ). Then the day arrived , she had decided to take on a new career opportunity and bade good bye to this wonderful city.

That day I got thinking about Good byes. We meet so many people everyday  And it so happens that one day or the other , we end up saying good bye to some of them. This happens so much so that sometimes we forget how important it is to say these two words - Good Bye...

I learnt the importance of Good byes from my father. His job makes him travel to a lot of places and as a result he is away most of the time. The incidence happened when I was going away from home for the first time to start my life as an independent girl.I got the job while I was still in college and after completion of my college degree I was supposed to join the firm. The day arrived and I packed my bags excitedly. I was very happy to be on my own. I had a train ticket and the journey was one night. My father was on tour at that time too. The station he was posted at that time happened to be on the way of my journey. The train didn't stop at that station but he told me that  he would come there to send me off. The train started at about 2 in the afternoon and my father told me that he expects the train to arrive at 8 in the evening at the town he was stationed. It is very common for Indian rails to be delayed and my train was not an exception. It was around 9 p.m. when the station arrived . The train slowed down but didn't stop. I looked out the window and saw my father frantically searching for me. I shouted loudly and he looked my way. He frantically started waving his hands , I could see that his eyes lit up.He was so happy to see me , to just stand there and mutter Good bye while the train kept on gaining momentum. All my life , I will not forget that moment.

I never understood till that day why it is important to accompany someone to the airport ,to the bus stand or to the railway station. It is because the image stays with you forever.

The experience with my father is tattooed in  my memory. But there are some experiences in our life , we struggle to forget. It so happened that someone very close to me decided to leave. I understand leaving, but isn't it your responsibility to inform your loved ones that you have decided to take off. I have lost all respect for the person in question, but at the same time learnt the importance of closure.Yes , it would have been painful to stand there and watch him go , but not as painful as wondering every single day about his reason for leaving without a formal Good bye. Somehow this incidence reminded of one of the Seinfeld episodes. There was a scene where Jerry and Elaine argue about the opposite of Good bye. Elaine argues that the opposite is Bad Bye , while Jerry stresses that Bad Bye is still Good Bye. Do you realize the depth of his observation? It doesn't matter how bad things got, or how hard it is to say Good Bye as it sounds like a Bad Bye, you owe it to the person to formally know that it is time to call quits and of course - Good Luck and Good Bye......

That is why it is customary in most cultures to call all the near and dear ones when a person passes away into the next realm. It is important to bid Farewell and feel sorrow for a while- it helps you to move on ,till the next GOOD BYE.....

That moment of anticipation.......

Let me tell you something , I never watched Winnie the Pooh as a kid. Ummmm.. Let me rephrase that, I haven't watched Winnie the Pooh ever. I know the names of some of the characters ...Winnie , piglet , rabbit , tigger .. I know that Winnie is a bear and he likes honey....He wears a red shirt with no pants.....That's all your honor ! That is all I know about Winnie the Pooh.

Romans had social baths we have social networking sites.I would be lying if I say that I have never wandered to some unknown person's account to see his pictures or never read his wall posts or never been to the "About Me" section of his profile. I was passing time by doing exactly that when I came across this beautiful quotation by A.A. Milne :- “"Well," said Pooh, "what I like best -- " and then he had to stop and think. Because although Eating Honey was a very good thing to do, there was a moment just before you began to eat it which was better than when you were, but he didn't know what it was called”

Do you feel the beauty of the quote ? So simple , yet so deep.

The greatest moments in life are those of anticipation. The moment when you are waiting for the result of your exam, the moment when you are waiting in a small room for the outcome of your job interview , the moment when you are waiting in line for your US visa , the moment when you are waiting for the vacation which begins next week , the moment when you lay eyes on a girl and decide in your heart that you will one day marry her, the moment when you do propose to her and are waiting on a reply , the moment when you are pacing frantically outside in the hospital corridor before the doctor comes close to you and whispers ,"It's a boy !" These moments are unlimited in number and though the day you get married has a name , the countless days and nights you wonder about your wedding day don't .We would be so much happier if we realize that when things are not happening , these precious moments of anticipation are getting prolonged , if you ask any guy he will tell you , the chase is more fun than the actual relationship !

At the end of the day we return to our glass half full and glass half empty analogy. It all depends on how you want to put it.You may choose to feel bad about the fact that you still don't have your dream job or you may smile that someday you would be doing your dream job and till then just sit back and enjoy the application process.I mean think about it , the day Ted meets the mother of his children , How I met your mother is finished.

Next Exit 27 Miles .....

I am in a weird state of mind today. A confused , dishevelled and sad state of mind. Things have been going haywire for quite a while now and though I am a resilient optimist , I have my days of despair and contemplation. I don't have any complaints because the best of songs are born from our worst of days.So , anyway , I just had a strange thought , assume for a while , you are lost in a forest , it is already getting dark , you are just walking where the path is leading you and after walking for miles you come to crossroads. You stand at the bifurcated path and wonder what lies to the other side of each of them.Time is running out , soon night will fall and then you may have to spend it alone in an unknown and scary place. You need to make a call , pronto ! You need to choose, which way is it going to be ? You toss a coin and choose the left one,not knowing that at the end of the right path ( aah! word play )was the most beautiful lodge on the bank of an awe inspiring river. You continue to traverse the path you had picked and realise in a while that you are going deeper and deeper into the forest , you hear the squeaks of bats and the howling of jackels in the vicinity, your heart is pumping faster , simultaneously you are wondering , " What if I had taken the other path?'

Life is not very different from the wild journey through a scary jungle. Have you ever wondered that it is possible to take one wrong (or right) turn and steer the course of your entire life ?

Okay, let's take a live scenario.I am in my 20s (now that was not necessary but soon I won't be able to mention it,so had to) and so are most of the people I know, hence the odds are that you too are in your 20s.I have led the very standard life of a pathetic engineer.I went to college , got a job in a multinational firm ,met a few people , made friends with some , had fall outs with others , fell in love once or twice and here I am , still searching for the "ONE".May be the story was a little different  for you, probably you found someone to settle down with during the course of your journey. Are you getting my point ? What if you had not gone to college wherever you went to college ? What if you had not been working where you are working ? What if you had not met all the people you have met till this point in your life ? What if you had taken up archealogy (yeah , that's an odd choice )  for that matter ? What if you had not lost your love (or had not been in love )? It is like driving on a freeway, sometimes you think ,"Hey !  gas ,  food , lodging everything is available at this exit, I should probably get off. At the same time you see the sign in front of you that says ,'Next Exit 27 miles' and you wonder ," May be I will make it there." Sometimes you do , sometimes you don't.

If you think about your life in retrospect , it seems so possible that instead of the scary jungle you could have ended up in the beautiful lodge. But then again who knows , may be my idea of the jungle is someone else's idea of a carefree lodge.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Spoiler Alert :- If you have not seen the movie yet and plan on watching it ,this post contains some plot revelations.

In fact , do watch the movie and then read the blog , it will make much more sense. The movie is quirky, confusing and sometimes overdone , but still a deeply moving work of art.

Disclaimer ! I doubt that many will cherish it.

Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind ! I really don’t know why but this line from Alexander Pope’s poem ‘Eloise to Aberald’ stirs something within me. The line is uttered by Eloise when she painfully reminisces her passionate affair with Aberald while she is separated from him and has been forced to take refuge in the Church. She wistfully looks at the vestal virgins who have never experienced the joy of being in romantic love and thus are acquitted from the sorrows of heart break. She envies them because unlike them , she has powerful feelings for the man she loves and has secretly married. The word ‘vestal’ means chaste. The vestal virgins have given up all desires and the purity of their mind and soul (spotless mind) gives them the happiness and tranquility (eternal sunshine) which Eloise so desperately seeks by
asking for forgetfulness rather than forgiveness .

The line was also used as the title for the 2004 American Romantic comedy film – Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind , in which also , forgetfulness becomes the heroine’s only refuge. The film has a cult following because of its brilliant subject matter and excellent performances by Kate Winslet ( as the free spirited Clementine Kruczynski ) and Jim Carrey ( as the emotionally withdrawn Joel Barish) who meet by chance and fall in love in spite of their polar opposite personalities.
As their relationship progresses, it worsens , as their character flaws result in constant clashes. Clementine being the impulsive one , gives up on the relationship first and decides to erase any memory of their relationship from her mind. She approaches Lacuna Inc. ( a fictional firm that performs the procedure of erasing certain memories from the brain). After the procedure , she fails to recognize Joel and leaves him perplexed . Joel comes to know about the aforementioned firm and the services they provide and in a state of fury decides upon undergoing the procedure himself.

Joel finds out that Clementine erased him from her memory

Joel decides to erase her memories

The memories in his brain start to get erased in reverse order , the most recent memories of his are of their constant bickering and frustration. As the procedure continues and Joel regresses towards erasing the happier times in their relationship , he realizes that he truly loves Clementine and wants to keep some memory of her .

Joel and Clementine(of Joel's memories) discuss inside Joel's brain how to save the memories
Notice that this Clementine is a reflection of his own subconscious

Most of the plot takes place inside Joel's mind where he attempts to  save some memory of Clementine while he is undergoing the procedure and is in an unconscious state. He is not able to save any but only the last thing that Clementine whispers to him ,” Meet me in Montauk.” After he regains consciousness ,he goes to Montauk not knowing why he is going there(Joel's first dialogue in the movie,"Ditched work today.Took a train out to Montauk. I don't know why. I'm not an impulsive person. I guess I just woke up in a funk this morning. ")He meets Clementine there (this means that Clementine of Joel's memories is very similar to the real Clementine and Joel knew exactly what she would do) and they fall in love once again ( bear in mind they are strangers at this point of time as both of them don’t have any memory of knowing each other ever). Later both of them receive a letter from Lacuna Inc. (leaked by Mary Svevo who once worked for the firm) about the procedure which had been performed on them. With this knew found knowledge , both of them are hesitant to take a step towards their relationship , but agree anyway. The movie ends at that.

letter leaked by Mary Svevo from lacuna Inc

Clementine's hair define the time period in their relationship because of the non linear narrative of the movie

Green signifies the beginning of the relationship

Red signifies the happy and passionate phase

Tangerine is when the problems start to surface

Blue is the first colour we see because the movie is in reverse, this is when they meet again after the procedure and fall in love for a second time

There are a lot of things to be learned from this cinematic masterpiece. First of all , the memory of any event in our life, good or bad has somehow contributed in making us what we are. That is why , when we lose a memory ,we lose a part of who we are. When Joel gets rid of Clementine’s memories , he also forgets some of the memories from his childhood. Moreover, when the two of them meet after the procedure , they get instantly attracted to each other and fall in love all over again , which means , the mind can be controlled but the heart wants what it wants.

Secondly, if we lose the memory of our past mistakes and their dire consequences , we are bound to commit them over and over. As is the case with Joel and Clementine , though they don’t work as a couple , they agree to give their relationship a second shot , not remembering any of their previous relationship issues.(I have to confess one thing that being a hopeless romantic , I would have taken the same step as Joel and Clementine and would have given the relationship a second chance , because in the end the journey with your loved one is worth taking in spite of all the pitfalls , isn't it what's life is all about - second chances?)

Thirdly , if we don’t remember what we have already gone through in life , we won’t be able to have the experience of getting over it and moving on. My favorite scene in the movie is when Joel and Clementine are sitting near the ocean , fully aware that they won't be able to save the memory of their love and Clementine leans and says , " Joel , all of this would be gone soon." Joel asks ," So, what do we do ?" and she replies ,"Enjoy." This scene is a work of sheer brilliance. It subtely hints that just because something is going to be gone soon , one should not just sit back and mourn, but fully enjoy it while it is still there.

Fourthly, when a relationship ends , all we are left with is the pain of the breakup, we purposely block the memories of the happier times , only because it makes moving on easier. As Joel realises midway through his procedure , that their tumultous relationship wasn't all bad. They had their fair share of good times and that is what is worth preserving. To fall in love is a matter of fate, but to continue to be in love needs acceptance of each other's faults and a strong will to be with each other in spite of them.

Lastly , all the events that transpire in our life are a learning experience , merely erasing them from the memory moots their purpose , which is to help us learn and grow ,because at the end –

Everybody’s got to learn sometime.

Eloise to Aberald

Love stories always fascinate me. They become all the more fascinating when they go on to create another thing that fascinates me - Literature. Among so many historic love stories , the love story of Eloise and Aberald charms me the most. Their story is tragic , but what makes them admirable is that they continued to go on living. They continued to love , to write  and to contribute to our literary history. They become all the more courageous in their being because unlike the characters of other tragic stories , they didn't kill themselves or married anybody else(unless you consider that both of them married the church).

                                                            Aberald teaching Eloise

Aberald was a famous 12th century French philosopher. Heloise was the niece of Canon Fulbert. She was well educated by her uncle in Paris. She was a woman of  great beauty and remarkable wit.In order to become aquainted with her, Aberald persuaded Fulbert and became her teacher and moved in to their house under the pretext that his house was not fit for teaching.Although she was 20 years his junior , they fell in love and of course her uncle found out about their affair.

Fulbert finds out about their affair

They were separated , but this didn't end their affair.Instead, they discovered that Eloise was pregnant. In order to avoid humiliation, she left her uncle's home when he wasn't at home and secretly went to stay with Aberald's sister untill their child was born. Aberald proposed to her, but she refused fearing the danger and disgrace it would bring him. Finally , when she agreed to marry him, they secretly married and left their son with Aberald's sister. She went on to stay with the nuns at Argenteuil , her uncle mistakenly thought that Aberald had cast her off , forcing her to become a nun.

Eloise is forced to become a nun

Enraged , he bribed the men in the hotel Aberald was staying and barged in to castrate him. After the assault , Aberald, thinking that God has punished him for his deeds (because of the thinking of that time) entered the monastery and bid Eloise to do the same.It was during this time they had exchanged letters which are a great work of literature.Their true love even became the inspiration behind Alexander Pope's poem ,'Eloise to Aberald' .

Though Eloise became a nun , she couldn't get over the passionate nights she had spent in Aberald's arms. She pined for him each and everyday , even though she knew that Aberald , now a eunuch couldn't love her the way she wanted him to love her. She even detested the vestal virgins who had become nuns by their choice and not because they were forced by anyone. In an excerpt from Alexander Pope's poem, she describes her agony:-

"How happy is the blamess vestal's lot!
The world forgetting , by the world forgot.
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
Each prayer accepted, and each wish resigned!"

Through their famous correspondence of 20 years their love continued to flourish , though they were separated. After many years they met briefly in Paris in a function and vowed to love each other forever. They never met again in their lifetime, but through their letters their love endured. It was 600 years later , when Josephine Bonaparte , deeply moved by their story ordered that the remains of Aberald and Eloise be entombed together. To this day, lovers from all over the world visit the Pere Lachaise cemetary in Paris, where Aberald and Eloise are united for eternity.

The good old Romans

Ever heard about something called the,’Past World Charm’? It is an unusual attraction towards the things and events of the past. Being an avid reader, I now and then stumble across many a fascinating things. During one of such diggings in the books of yesterday, I came across the fancy ancient Romans. They have given us so many things, the Julian  calendar (with the name of the months we use till this day), civil engineering (arches & columns ,domes,sculptures,frescoes,mosaics...) ,  romance languages ( Latin language and descendants) , roman alphabets(a widespread writing system) , festivals(Christmas , carnivals etc ) ,stadiums( modern day amphitheaters), republic and senate(inspiration for modern democracies), roman legal system (basis of many European legal system to this day), the three course meal ( starter, main ,dessert) ,aqueducts and viaducts(the world’s first bridges to cross valleys),Wine making(creating a lasting tradition in France, Italy , Spain..),thermal baths ,central heating and floor heating , concrete/mortar/cement.
They were skilled engineers and politicians and had a penchant for socializing and feasting. Having said so many good things about the Romans, I now want to bring to your attention some of their idiosyncrasies, and we are lucky, as the Romans had many!
1)      The Romans were early risers. The Roman bedroom was a small, simple room, not made to encourage anyone made to stay in bed any longer than what was thought necessary. The Romans believed that to be awake is to be alive! Anyone who slept for too long was looked upon with contempt and was suspected to be a drunken lout!  (Huh ! And you thought going out on a Friday night and then staying late in bed the next day made you look cool!)
2)      The Romans liked to bathe and they built a lot of public baths in almost all their cities. These baths were recreational centers and consisted of spas, gyms, libraries, hot and cold rooms, oil and massage centers and were even the stage for huge conspiracies against the ruling emperors. The Romans used to discuss business, household matters and politics while enjoying a hot shower. So , to conclude, Romans' idea of bathing was more than just cleaning and relaxing. Oh ! I almost forgot , the baths had some slaves dedicated solely for the purpose of plucking armpit hair.(Imagine for a second ,some slave working on yours , plucking one at a time.)
3)      The Romans had a sweet tooth. It is debated whether or not sugar was known to them, but in either case they preferred honey. Dormouse pie was a delicacy in ancient Rome. This pie consisted of meat from dormice which had been fed exclusively with figs, hence their flesh was considered sweet. ( Anyone going to catch some rats today for a hot home cooked pie !!)
4)      The Romans built public lavatories as they built public baths. The important thing to be noticed here is that when the Roman say public, they mean it.To be more clear, it means that there were no enclosed spaces and hence no privacy. They believed in socializing, and when they agreed upon bathing as a social activity, they probably wondered,”Why not defecating?”  (Creepy isn’t it?)
5)       The Romans were famous for their extravagant banquets .There were multiple courses and a lot of wine to be consumed and the feasting lasted all night. But how did the Romans managed to eat all night? According to Seneca, the Romans vomited so they could eat and they ate so they could vomit. Apparently, according to Cicero, Julius Ceasar dodged an attempt to be assassinated when he decided to go to his bedroom to vomit (Yuckk !!) instead of the bathroom where his assassins were waiting in anticipation.
6)      The Romans enjoyed games which involved a lot of blood .They built huge amphitheaters which catered to their unique interests. The entry to these amphitheatres was nominal so that all the citizens could enjoy the games. The games involved gladiator combats, gladiator fights with wild animals like lions and tigers, public executions and more often than not animals were trained to copulate with humans for public enjoyment. (What can I say?)
7)      Homosexuality was very common in ancient Rome. It was acceptable for a Roman male to be interested in both women and young boys as Roman Society defined sexuality not based on gender but based on the role acquired (‘penetrator’ or ‘penetrated’) in the sexual relationship.Although male homosexuality was acceptable, female homosexuality was frowned upon. Women were considered inferior and were supposed to show no interest in sex whatsoever , if a female showed any kind of pleasure while having sex , she was considered disgusting and this served as a very common ground for divorce. Julius Ceasar openly had relations with both men and women and was notoriously known as :-Every woman’s husband and every man’s wife. (I want to put it out there that I didn’t know this about Ceaser ).
8)       During Roman Emperor Nero’s tenure transparent clothing was in vogue. Women wore sheer clothes with nothing underneath. Seneca with his usual elegant turn of phrase wrote in a letter to his mother ,"Never have you fancied the kind of dress that exposed no greater nakedness by being removed." The sheer clothes had to be banned later as women complained that they don’t have anything to show to their husband which he hasn’t already seen on the streets.(Wow ! The streets of Rome were perhaps the inspiration behind the playboy mansion)
9)      Roman emperors were infamous for their orgies and weird interests. Roman emperor Nero was rumored to be sleeping with his mother and married a boy named Sporus after castrating him, Tiberius had erotic paintings in his bedroom in case a performer need to be told want needs to be done , Caligula opened a brothel in his palace , raped whomever he wished , reported on the woman’s performance to her husband , committed incest(incest was rather common as the Romans believed that they have Royal blood and it should not go out of their family) , killed for greed and thought he should be treated as god. Elagabalus would often dress in women’s clothing and requested his doctors to turn him into a woman(he perhaps was the first transvestite !!) There are many more emperors and all the more filthier acts of deceit , lust , debauchery and corruption , but they are so unethical and disgusting that even mentioning them will make me look improper.
10)   The ancient Romans used their urine to get their white tunics cleaned and bleached .Of course, the ammonia contained in urine did the trick. No doubt the smell of the urine didn’t just leave the clothes after the wash. Ancient Romans smelt really ‘pissy’. (Is anyone in the mood for laundry ?)

Oh ! I have written 10 fascinating facts about them in almost no time. I will write some more sometime later. But for now, think about the saying,” When in Rome, do what the Romans do.”  ;-)

PS :- The Romans are so colorful that I didn't feel the need to put pictures to make this post saucier. :P

A thing of beauty ......

Excerpt from Endymion
A thing of beauty is a joy for ever:
Its loveliness increases; it will never
Pass into nothingness

May be looking out the window of his house at the right side of the Spanish Steps  in Piazza di Spagna  in Italy ,John Keats wrote the first line of his poem Endymion.

The cream-coloured building to the right is the apartment where John Keats lived
The beauty of Italy transcends beyond imagination and the joy one feels by simply looking what this country has to offer makes life worthwile.Italy is the land of surreal buildings of stones which make you believe that may be the stones were in liquid state when these architectural masterpieces were created . The sculptors have magically transformed once mere pieces of rock into monuments of historical significance. If you have an eye for art and understand the basics of architecture , the fact that these buildings actually exist is more than enough to send a shiver through your spine.

The stunning Duomo di Milano

In case you don’t know what Mosaic is , it is the art of creating images by assembling quadratic pieces of colored glass. Mosaics cover the ceilings and walls of most of the churches and museums in Italy, they may be a mere decorative theme or hold spiritual significance but more than that they are a feast for the eyes.

And so are the Vatican Ceilings ……

Colosseum Rome

Italy can arguably boast about having the oldest buildings in the world which are well preserved and have stood the test of time. Anyone who visits Italy is unwittingly drawn to the Colosseum .It is the largest amphitheatre built in the Roman empire and was originally capable of seating 50,000 spectators. The Colosseum , initially known as the Flavian amphitheatre after the name of the dynasty which built it was completed in 80 A.D. Its construction began under emperor Vespasius in 72 A.D. and completed under emperor Titus. It has been a witness to gladiator fights , mock sea battles , fights between gladiators and beasts, public executions and many more gory events. In its heydays it provided a source of entertainment to the blood crazy Roman populace. Two thousand years have passed since its construction but the remains of the colosseum still fascinate anyone who visits Rome.

Pantheon Rome

The Pantheon meaning ‘the shrine of the Gods’ is the best-preserved buildings in Rome and the oldest in the world with its original roof intact. It was originaly built as a temple to the seven deities of the seven planets in the state religion of ancient Rome, but it has been a church since 7th Century. It has been in continuous use throughout the history. The interior of the roof is intented to symbolize the heavens. The Great Eye , 27 feet across , at the dome’s apex is the source of all light and is symbolic of the sun.The composition of Roman concrete used in the dome remains a mystery. An unreinforced dome in these proportions made of modern concrete would hardly stand the load of its own weight, since concrete has very low tensile strength, yet the Pantheon has stood for centuries. It is believed that when Micheal angelo walked into the Pantheon for the first time , he was so impressed that he said ," This has to be a work of angels." Keep in mind being a man of extraordinary talents , he wasn't some one who could be easily impressed. The structure of the Pantheon had been an inspiration to many modern day buildings.

Baths of Caracalla
The baths of Caracalla in Rome were built between  AD 212 and 216. The baths were more of a leisure center and consisted of a libray, gym, swimming pool , hot and cold rooms , oil and massage facilities.Today the remains of the baths are a major tourist attraction .

Ruins of Pomepii
Pompeii was destroyed in 79 A.D. by the sudden eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The ruins of Pompeii have been succesfully excavated over the past few 100 years and it has since been a popular tourist as well as archeological site. The ruins reveal a lot about the lives of the people in the ancient Roman era. At the time of eruption the town was inhabitated by around 20,000 people and was a holiday spot for many wealthy Romans who had villas in the city.It is said that Pompeii had reached its high point in society as many Romans frequently visited Pompeii on vacations.

From the ruins of yesterday you can quickly walk into the most modern of fashion houses in this magical country.Italy is home to fashion giants like Gucci , Versace , Fendi , Prada , Armani , Dolce and Gabbana ,Roberto Cavalli , Valentino and many more. Milan Fashion Week, established in 1958 is part of the Big 4 fashion weeks internationally, the others being Paris Fashion Week, London Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week. The schedule begins with New York, followed by London, and then Milan, and ending the events in Paris.

Italy has picturesque mountains and valleys which are covered with daffodils , camellias , bougainvilleas , sunflowers , roses , irises , lavenders , daisies , lilies , orchids and many more for which I don’t have names. Homes and balconies are vibrant with magnificent colors which glow even brighter in the sunshine.

The Grand Canal in Venice was perhaps the abode of Venus for she was the goddess of love , sex , victory , fertility , beauty and prosperity. There is an air in Venice which fills your heart with joy and romance. It is not an exaggeration to say that everyone in love looks forward to the experience of riding in the Gondolas in Vatican City. There is a mysterious attraction in the water , the buildings at the banks , the boats , the sun at the horizon ,as they all come together and mesmerize your soul with that thing called ‘Love’.

Italy is so rich culturally and so gifted naturally that to include all that is beautiful about it in one post is perhaps a herculean task. Everyday one can come across yesterday in this country. The city is so ancient that there is almost a magical feel to it. There once was a traveler who came across a church which was built on the remains of a church ,which itself was built on the remains of another church. Four stories beneath the current cobblestone paved walkway centuries ago there used to be another walkway where people used to walk and chat and barter and sell and love and fight and sing and dance. Time is the only witness to all events that transpire. Today we walk the cobblestone paved streets and create a part of history .
